UNICEF Installation and Repairs - Solar Powered Refrigeration Systems PDF Print E-mail
On the 3rd of August 2006 the Training of ten (10) District Medical Health Team staff started in Kenema, UNICEF Sub-Office. The training was focused on installation and repair of solar photovoltaic refrigeration systems for the nation's cold-chain for vaccines.

The first part of training started in the classroom with basic photovoltaic matters combined with refrigeration technology. An intensive theory course was held for four weeks in Kenema.  Participants who were sent from seven Districts took part in an intensive and challenging  training course; The participants had no previous knowledge of solar or refrigeration technology.

The theory session end with a final exam, providing both the trainers and participants with evidence of certification to take into the field.

In 2003, UNICEF Sierra Leone implemented the first solar powered refrigerators for District cold-rooms nationwide. The cold-chain for necessary vaccines were not well maintained, and so UNICEF tried to bring more refrigerators into the country that functioned without expensive running costs.

Some years before, alternative vaccines were in use that worked with gas cylinders. However, there were significant problems with the transportation of the gas cylinders, in addition of their expense.

Since 2004, a huge supply of solar powered refrigerators entered Sierra Leone and about 700 such systems are now in the country. The problem with the existing systems is that they were not well maintained. The vaccines kept in these refrigerators are very important to stop the primary cause of death among infants and children under the age of five (Such diseases are polio, measle, titanus,). The first shipment of PV-Systems were installed by a Liberian Contractor, who also held a training for some district technicians.

In the beginning of August, the Training Team of Safer Future Youth Development Project started to work on the field to correct problems with existing systems. The field work was closely monitored by the responsible Health Officer UNICEF, and the management of the organization. The practical work covered seven districts in the eastern and southern region.
